Is Your Child’s Mental Health Suffering in School? Why More Parents Are Taking Learning Home

This is something I hear more and more: “My child just isn’t coping in school anymore.” It’s not always an academic issue. Often, it’s emotional. A slow, quiet burnout that builds over time… until something breaks.

Over the past few years, I’ve seen just how many families are making the choice to home educate because of mental health and emotional wellbeing. It’s not a decision taken lightly. In fact, most parents I speak to tried everything they could to make school work (EHCPs, meetings, referrals, adjustments) but nothing seemed to change how their child was feeling.

I’ve spoken to parents whose children cried every morning, who masked all day only to unravel at home, who lost confidence, stopped sleeping, or simply began fading into the background. And these aren’t rare stories… they’re heartbreakingly common.

It’s easy to feel alone when this is happening. Like you’re the only one whose child isn’t thriving where they’re “meant” to be. But you’re not alone. More and more parents are asking: what if school isn’t the right fit for my child right now? And what if home could be a place of healing, not just learning?

Home education, for many, becomes less about academics and more about recovery. About giving children the space to breathe, to feel safe, to rediscover themselves. It doesn’t have to be perfect or polished. It just has to be responsive, kind, and calm.

Some signs I often hear from parents that indicate a deeper issue:

  • Daily school refusal or intense anxiety before school
  • Emotional meltdowns after the school day
  • Loss of joy in things they used to love
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches with no clear cause
  • Regressive behaviours or increased withdrawal

These aren’t “bad behaviours”. They’re stress responses. They’re signals that something isn’t right.

Home can be a place to reset. It can be slower, quieter. You can build rhythms around your child’s needs, incorporate therapy or creative outlets, follow their interests. And over time, you can rebuild trust… not just in learning, but in life.

At The Anthill Community, we meet so many families in this place: worried, exhausted, unsure what to do next. That’s why we exist: to offer calm support, practical help, and a space where you don’t have to explain yourself. We believe education should support well being, not come at its cost.
