Why We’re Creating a Parent-First Platform for Home Learning
We’ve spent decades working in education—first in Further Education colleges, then in Independent Schools. And while the settings differed, the underlying story stayed the same:
Education Is Still Built Around Outdated Metrics
For all the talk of innovation, most schools—state or independent—are still judged by metrics that belong to a different era.
- Attendance rates (as if sitting in a classroom guarantees engagement)
- Standardised assessments (measuring performance under pressure, not true understanding)
- Predicted grades and exam results (which shape futures but rarely reflect potential)
- Progress 8 scores and value-added data (complex formulas that say little about creativity or confidence)
- University placement stats (despite many students questioning if university is still the right path)
- Pupil behaviour logs (that can penalise neurodivergent or misunderstood learners)
Even independent schools, which often pride themselves on nurturing the “whole child,” still have to prove their worth using the same narrow benchmarks. Because the system is designed to track inputs and outputs… not actual growth.
But here’s the problem: real learning isn’t linear.
Confidence doesn’t show up in spreadsheets.
And future readiness looks less like a test score and more like adaptability, empathy, curiosity, and resilience.
For some children, the current system is still fine. But for more and more families, it simply isn’t working.
What We’re Hearing From Parents (Every Week)
We’ve spoken with countless families over the last few years. Different backgrounds, different stories but the same themes keep surfacing:
- Children anxious about going to school every day
- Bright kids being labelled as “difficult” when really, they’re overwhelmed or bored
- Bullying being ignored or mishandled
- Parents feeling unheard, unsupported, or blamed
- A growing sense that school is no longer preparing children for the world they’ll actually inherit
And underneath it all? A quiet kind of grief.
Not just for what’s not working now, but for what might be coming.
“What kind of jobs will even exist when my child finishes school?”
“Why is no one preparing them for AI, climate change, or remote work?”
“Why is school still built around university entry when the world of work is completely shifting?”
These aren’t fringe concerns. This is the new mainstream.
And families are opting out—not out of rebellion, but out of responsibility.
When the System Stops Serving the Child
Many of the parents we’ve met didn’t start out wanting to homeschool.
They just reached a point where school felt like a daily battle—and they didn’t want their child’s entire self-worth tied to test scores, behaviour charts, or how quietly they could sit.
So they stepped away from the system…
And suddenly found themselves completely alone.
No curriculum. No roadmap. No one to say, “You’re doing okay.”
So We Asked: Who Supports the Parents?
Parents aren’t trained to be educators. But more and more are becoming them by necessity.
And while we’ve worked with teachers for years—and have the deepest respect for their role… we’ve seen how little exists to support the parent in a home learning context.
That’s why we created The Anthill.
What We’re Building (and Why It’s Different)
The Anthill is a parent-first platform for home learning.
We’re building tools, community, and guidance for the people who are suddenly responsible for everything (and want to get it right) without burning out.
Here’s how we’re doing it:
AI With Heart
Our AI isn’t about replacing human teaching, it’s about supporting human parenting.
It’s built to be:
- Empowering, not overwhelming
- Flexible, so it adapts to your child’s style and your schedule
- Human-aware, so it reflects real-life learning, not textbook ideals
Need a lesson idea on the fly?
Want to summarise progress for a portfolio?
Looking for tips on teaching a tricky topic?
The Anthill’s AI features help you feel capable and in control.
Access to Real Experts, On Your Terms
Sometimes AI isn’t enough… you need a real human to talk to. That’s why we’re offering direct access to teachers, therapists, and learning specialists, with the option to:
- Book 1:1 sessions to get help with tricky concepts
- Ask questions about curriculum choices, teaching strategies, or SEND support
- Get coaching on how to teach your child in a way that works for them
It’s like having a staffroom in your pocket—without needing to be a trained teacher to ask for help.
We Focus on Micro Wins
We don’t believe in perfect homeschool days. We believe in:
- A child completing a task they usually avoid
- A parent and child laughing in the middle of a maths meltdown
- Choosing calm instead of chaos
- Taking the pressure off, and still learning something meaningful
Our platform helps you track, celebrate, and build momentum—even in 15-minute bursts.
We Lead With Community
The Anthill isn’t just about tools. It’s about people.
You’ll find:
- A warm, inclusive community of like-minded parents
- Bite-sized wisdom from SEND aware educators
- A space where you can ask for help without fear or judgment
Because you shouldn’t have to Google your way through every challenge. And you definitely shouldn’t have to pretend it’s easy. Join our Facebook group to talk to like-minded parents who get it.
Why “The Anthill”?
Ants build collaboratively. Quietly. Purposefully. Together, they create thriving systems far bigger than any individual effort.
That’s the spirit behind what we’re building.
Small steps. Shared knowledge. Collective strength.
