Why So Many Families Are Choosing Home Education in 2025

Over the past few years, I’ve watched home education move from something viewed as ‘alternative’ to something many families are now actively choosing and not just in emergencies or as a last resort. It’s been striking to see how rapidly the numbers are growing. In London alone, over 11,000 children are now being home educated, and nationally the trend is accelerating.

But behind the numbers are real families, real stories, and very personal reasons.   When I talk to parents in our Anthill Community, I hear common threads: children struggling with anxiety, unmet special educational needs, or simply feeling overwhelmed and unseen in school. Others just want a calmer, more connected way of learning.

I’ve spoken with parents who never imagined they’d be home educating, but something shifted, maybe it was watching their child’s spark fade under school pressure, or trying everything to get support and getting nowhere. Often, it’s not a dramatic decision but a quiet, thoughtful move towards something gentler.

There’s a deep desire for learning that respects the whole child, not just academic targets, but emotional wellbeing, confidence, curiosity. Home education allows space for that. It creates room to breathe. And when you start to see your child come back to life, the relief is almost physical.

That’s not to say it’s easy. Many parents carry guilt or doubt, and the learning curve can feel steep. But I also see families rediscovering joy in learning together, building rhythms that work for them, and finding unexpected confidence along the way.

One parent in our community told me:

“Our daughter was masking all day at school and would come home utterly exhausted. Since moving to home education, she’s more confident, calmer, and actually excited about learning again.”

Another shared:

“We didn’t plan to home educate but after struggling through post-lockdown anxiety and seeing our son thrive at home, it just made sense to continue.”

These aren’t isolated stories. They’re part of a wider shift. A growing number of families saying: there has to be a better way. And often, there is.

If you’re one of those parents who’s been thinking about it, know this: you’re not alone. Home education might feel like a big leap, but you’ll find so many others walking the same path, asking the same questions, and building something beautiful out of challenge.

At The Anthill Community, we’re here to walk alongside you: offering tools, reassurance, and a place to belong. That’s exactly why we created Anthill: to support a growing community of parents who want something different for their children. We’re here to provide not just information, but real emotional support, connection, and the practical help you need to feel confident and calm in your home education journey.
